Mr. Corish asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the urgency of an early decision being taken on a changeover from imperial to metric measurement: and when a decision is likely to be made by the Government on the date of the changeover and on the arrangements necessary for adequate preparations to be made.

[319] Mr. Colley: I have had the question of a changeover from the imperial to the metric system of weights and measures under consideration for some time with a view to making recommendations to the Government as soon as possible.

Experience in other countries is that the changeover is a slow process extending over years and the pace of change varies in the different sectors of the economy.
