Dáil Éireann - Volume 246 - 19 May, 1970

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wheat Bushelling.

54. Mr. Donegan asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, when the changeover to the metric system occurs, it will be legal to use the present licensed wheat bushelling machine for bushelling wheat and use a conversion card to produce kilos instead of lbs.

Mr. Lalor: The weights and measures office is in consultation with the machine manufacturers to ensure [1798] that either new or converted bushelling machines with metric readings will be available in time for the 1971 wheat crop, and the use of conversion tables should therefore not be necessary. However, should the use of conversion tables be necessary during a transitional period, their use would be lawful under the Weights and Measures Acts, 1878 to 1936.
