Dáil Éireann - Volume 241 - 23 October, 1969

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Introduction of Metric System.

257. Mr. O.J. Flanagan asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he proposes to set up a national metric board to deal with queries from all sections of the community and to avoid confusion when change-over takes place in 1975; and if he will make a statement on how advice and inquiries will be answered to avoid confusion and chaos.

Mr. Colley: The change-over to the metric system is not due to take place in 1975 or indeed at any fixed time. It will be a gradual process, which it is hoped will have been generally completed [1758] by 1975. Substantial progress towards metrication has been made by a number of industries with which my Department has been in contact. When the stage approaches at which the distributive sector and the public generally will be involved, I feel that the assistance of a steering committee would be useful and I will consider how one should be established. Meanwhile inquiries should continue to be addressed to my Department.
