Dáil Éireann - Volume 248 - 21 July, 1970 Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Metric System Conversion. Dr. O'Connell Dr. O'Connell 1434 [1434] 45. Dr. O'Connell asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the approximate cost to the country of the conversion to the metric system. Minister for Industry and Commerce (Mr. Lalor) Patrick J. Lalor Minister for Industry and Commerce (Mr. Lalor): There is no estimate of this and any attempt to assess a total cost would be both onerous and unrealistic. I am satisfied, from my Department's contacts with industry, that in the great majority of cases the costs of metrication will be very low, either because all that is required is the adjustment or re-calibration of existing equipment or because, where re-equipment is necessary, it can be effected in the course of normal replacement which would be necessary in any event. Dr. O'Connell Dr. O'Connell Dr. O'Connell: Is the Minister aware that they were able to determine the cost in Britain? Mr. Lalor Mr. Lalor Mr. Lalor: I am aware of the fact that they were not. Dr. O'Connell Dr. O'Connell Dr. O'Connell: I thought they were. Mr. Tully Mr. Tully Mr. Tully: They tried anyway. Mr. Lalor Mr. Lalor Mr. Lalor: And failed. Dáil Éireann 248 Ceisteanna—Questions.
