Written Answers. - Higher Education Budgets.

Deputy Ruairí Quinn asked the Minister for Education and Science the cases in which a university’s governing authority has informed the Higher Education Authority of expenditure in excess of their allocated budget, as in line with Section 37 of the Universities Act 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [42007/08]

[373]   Deputy Batt O’Keeffe: The Higher Education Authority has advised my Department that five of the universities have notified the Authority that their expenditure will be in excess of their 2008 budget. The universities concerned are University College Dublin, University College Cork, NUI Maynooth, Trinity College Dublin and University of Limerick.

The HEA is in continuing correspondence with all the universities in relation to recurrent funding levels and is satisfied that the universities are taking action to address their budgetary deficits. The HEA will continue to monitor the levels of deficits to ensure these are addressed.
