Deputy Mary Upton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the number, in respect of her and of her Ministers of State, the constituency office and the private office, of staff employed, broken down by grade and the cost of each office in terms of salaries and expenses for 2007 and the projected costs for 2008; if there will be a reduction in staffing levels in these offices, arising from the requirement to effect a 3% reduction in salary costs; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [300] Deputy Mary Coughlan: The tables following outline the number of staff by grade in my private and constituency office and in those of each Minister of State within my Department. The cost for 2007 of each such office in terms of salary, overtime and expenses are included together with the costs for 2008 to date. It should be noted that the Office of the Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation was created on 20th June 2007 and, therefore, the figures do not represent a full calendar year.

There are also two additional Ministers of State who have responsibility in this Department, however, they do not have offices in the Department. The Ministers concerned are:

Minister for Equality, Disability and Mental Health at the Department of Health and Children.

Minister for Lifelong Learning at the Department of Education and Science.

Measures to effect a 3% reduction in salary costs have been agreed as part of the estimates process and this includes the suppression of a number of posts which will be spread across the Department.
