Written Answers. - Schools of Music.

Deputy Seán Sherlock asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide the necessary funding to ensure music and drama and classes will continue to be provided to enrolling secondary and primary school students at the Cork School of Music; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23589/08]

Deputy Batt O’Keeffe: As the Deputy will be aware, the Cork School of Music represents a constituent part of Cork Institute of Technology. The position is that the Institutes of Technology are autonomous institutions and my Department does not have any function in their day-to-day operational affairs. The Institutes receive a block grant from the Higher Education Authority and it is a matter for each institution to determine how it is allocated internally. In the case of the Cork School of Music, it is a matter for Cork Institute of Technology to determine the level of funding to be allocated to the School, and I have no role in this matter.
