Deputy Tony Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of children currently detained 23 hours a day in St. Patrick’s Institution, Dublin 7; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20006/07]

  Deputy Brian Lenihan:I am informed by the Director General of the Irish Prison Service that no persons in St. Patrick’s Institution are detained in their cells 23 hours a day. All persons detained there get a minimum of 2 hours exercise per day and leave their cells for various other activities throughout the day.

There is a wide range of activities available to young offenders in St. Patrick’s Institution including Education, Work/Training, the Library and a fully fitted out gymnasium. They also have access to the Probation and Chaplaincy services as well [573] as Medical, Psychological and Psychiatric services.
