Dáil Éireann - Volume 569 - 25 June, 2003

Written Answers. - Local Authority Staff.

[952]   273. Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government the number of vets employed by local authorities around the country; the local authorities which actually employ vets; the cost of their employment; the role and job description of each; his views on whether it is still appropriate for local authorities to employ vets; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17952/03]

Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government (Mr. Cullen): The most recent information available to my Department on the number of veterinary inspectors, including full time and part time, employed by local authorities is set out in the following table. The terms and conditions of their employment are matters for the Minister for Agriculture and Food and virtually all their salary costs are currently recouped to the local authorities from the Vote of the Department of Health and Children via the Food Safety Authority of Ireland. The costs and funding of the local authority veterinary service are currently being examined by a review group chaired by the Department of Finance.
