[437] 668. Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reason cars reported as stolen are not clamped when found by gardaí to prevent thieves coming back and re-using them; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15476/03]

Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. McDowell): As the Deputy is aware, the clamping of vehicles is a mechanism aimed at countering illegal parking. I am informed that the Garda authorities do not consider that the system is suitable for the purpose suggested by the Deputy.
