Written Answers - Illegal Dumping.

  365. Mr. Costello asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources [261] if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the contents of three tailings ponds containing hazardous residue from the old lead and zinc mines at Ballysadare, County Sligo, have been illegally dumped into Ballysadare Bay, thereby threatening the bay with a major ecological disaster; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6888/03]

Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources (Mr. D. Ahern): I am not aware of any illegal dumping of hazardous material in Ballysadare Bay. I understand, however, that Sligo County Council is currently investigating excavations carried out in the vicinity of the old lead and zinc mine at Ballysadare and the effects, if any, of these works on the adjacent environment.
