Dr. Woods Dr. Woods
Minister for Education and Science (Dr. Woods): The case of the young person to whom the Deputy refers was before the High Court on 14 November 2000 and was brought to the attention of my Department that morning.
From time to time difficulties can arise in accommodating individual children on the first day on which placement is sought in any of the young offender centres, due to pressure on places on a given day. However, in this case, my Department was able to advise the court that a place was available for the young person in St. Michael's Remand and Assessment Centre, Finglas, Dublin 11. The judge ordered the placement of the young person to St. Michael's until 15 December 2000 pending placement in Trinity House special school.
The young person was before the Children's Court previously in January 1999 and was placed in St. Laurence's special school, Finglas, Dublin 11, until January 2000.
