Ms McManus asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if her attention has been drawn to reports that a satellite television company (details supplied) is planning to start screening separate commercial breaks in transmissions to Ireland; the implications, if any, of this plan for RTE and TV3; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1381] Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands (Miss de Valera): I have seen newspaper reports indicating that the company referred to may be planning to screen separate commercial breaks aimed at Ireland. However, I have not seen any definite plans in this regard. I have no direct function in the activities of a broadcaster based outside this jurisdiction. Any action which might be taken by the authorities here would depend on the precise mechanism to be used to screen these advertisements.
