50. Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Finance the number of civil servants who were employed by the Government on 1 July 1997, for each Department; the agreed establishment number for each Department according to Government policy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15693/97]

Minister for Finance (Mr. McCreevy): In June 1996 the Government set core staffing targets for each Department, which were to be achieved by 1 July 1997. Some of these targets were subsequently modified by the Government, to make allowance for additional work or transfer of work from one Department to another, giving an overall target of 29,457.5. On 1 July 1997, I am pleased to say, the number of civil servants was 28,955, well within the target. A number of Departments have been allowed to retain staff for transient tasks on a temporary basis. Such staff are known as “non-core” or “transient”. The staff who were working on the census in the Central Statistics Office are an example. These staff must be given up after the work in question has been completed, with the staff concerned being absorbed into fillable vacancies within their own Department or being redeployed into other Departments. The staffing levels for each Department at 1 July 1997 against the latest targets are shown in a tabular statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report. The names of the Departments and the Departmental line up in this tabular statement reflect those which were in force on that date. ACHIEVEMENT OF TARGET STAFFING FIGURES
