Written Answers - Replacement of Traffic Lights.

156. Miss Quill asked the Minister for the Environment whether he has received a submission from Cork Corporation in respect of the funding of the replacement of existing traffic lights in the city; his views on whether the current traffic lights have outlived their usefulness; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21166/96]

Minister for the Environment (Mr. Howlin): Cork Corporation recently submitted a proposal to my Department under the EU co-financed scheme of grants for specific improvement projects on non-national roads, for funding the replacement of the urban traffic control system in the city. However, the proposed works do not fall within the categories of works eligible for funding [788] under this scheme. My Department has previously informed the corporation that there is no objection to the use of the corporation's annual discretionary grant, which amounts to £1 million in 1996, for this purpose.
