Written Answers. - EU Habitats Directive.

35. Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht when the EU Habitats Directives will be transposed into national law; and if he will make a statement on the measures, if any, he is taking to protect Irish habitats. [17613/96]

Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht (Mr. M. Higgins): I am currently in the process of producing regulations to transpose the EU Habitats [1370] Directive into Irish law and I expect to have these in place by the end of October. I and my officials have had meetings with farming organisations and other interested groups and it is intended to have further meetings over the next few weeks. The Deputy can be assured that appropriate measures are being put in place through the regulations to protect Irish habitats in line with the provisions of the Directive.
