Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice if she will give details of the number of pornographic videos seized by the Gardai in 1992 and numbers seized to date in 1993; the definition used to determine a pornographic video; if such videos are destroyed; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Justice (Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn): I am informed by the Garda authorities that pornographic video tapes are seized on a country-wide basis by gardaí and no central record of the number seized is readily available.

Such tapes are seized under section 42 of the Custom's Consolidation Act, 1876, where the member concerned believes them to be imported and obscene.

Pornographic tapes seized by the gardaí are destroyed.
