Written Answers. - Tax Relief for Fire Brigade Personnel.

68. Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Finance if he will exempt retained fire brigade personnel from paying tax on their fire brigade income from their local authority.

Minister for Finance (Mr. B. Ahern): I would not be in favour of introducing additional tax reliefs or exemptions for a particular group of workers such as fire brigade personnel, not just because of the cost of such a move, but also because it would undoubtedly generate demands for similar treatment from other groups which would, in equity be very hard to resist. This would lead to a substantial loss of revenue to the Exchequer which simply could not be contemplated in current circumstances.
