40. Mr. G. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for the Marine if he will outline the action, if any, he proposes to take to curtail foreign fishing fleets from gill net fishing off our coast; as it is now a matter of serious concern to our fishing industry.

Minister for the Marine (Dr. Woods): Gill netting is an effective and selective method of fishing, which, when properly deployed, can contribute more to conservation than some other forms of fishing. Through its selectivity it allows undersized and immature fish to pass freely through the net, with larger fish only being caught. Generally fish caught in this way are in better condition than those caught in trawls.

I am aware, however, that improper and uncontrolled use of these nets can be wasteful and even destructive. My Department have asked the Navy and Air Corps to pay particular attention to [1845] identifying illegal and improper practices in this area.

I am currently reviewing the regulations governing gill netting. In order to determine the full extent and impact of this activity vessels employed therein are being closely monitored by my Department. When the scientific data gleaned from such monitoring has been analysed, I will consider it fully and take appropriate action.
