Written Answers. - School Furniture.

247. Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education if he will outline his Department's policy on the provision of school furniture and in particular if it is desired policy that (1) all school furniture be manufactured in Ireland and (2) the research or studies which are being carried out on the furniture to assess its suitability to prevent injury to the user; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Education (Mr. Davern): My Department's policy in relation to the supply of school furniture is in line with the various EC directives, however, I am pleased to say that the vast bulk of all school furniture funded by my Department is manufactured in Ireland. With regard to the quality and safety aspects of furniture, the Department's specifications require manufacturers to comply fully with the relevant research and standards specifications.
