245. Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Education the number of appointments made to the position of messenger, porter or similar grade to his Department since October 1988; the way those appointed were selected for interview; and the role FáS play in the procedure.

Minister for Education (Mr. Davern): The information requested by the Deputy is as follows: messengers, two (2) permanent appointments; cleaners five (5) permanent appointments.

My Department also employ temporary porters, on a seasonal basis, to assist in the examinations branch. The numbers appointed since October 1988 are as follows: 1989, 12; 1990, 9; 1991, 13.

Prospective appointees are sent forward for interview by the local FáS offices, which give priority to persons who are unemployed or who are in temporary short term employment. Those sent forward are assessed by my Department as to suitability.
