Written Answers. - Departmental Appointments.

86. Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the number of appointments made to the position of messenger, porter or similar grade to his Department since October 1988; the way [1791] those appointed were selected for interview; and the role FáS plays in the procedure.

Minister for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Collins): A total of four services officers, formerly messengers, were employed by my Department in the period since October 1988. Three were redeployed or transferred from other areas of the public service, and one was appointed following interview.

My Department hold interview competitions from time to time to fill vacancies in the services officer and services attendant grades. A competition to establish a panel from which existing and anticipated vacancies in the services officer and services attendant grades will be filled is currently under way. FáS were invited to nominate suitably qualified candidates and a total of 11 FáS nominees have been called for interview.
