Written Answers. - Bovine TB Eradication.

53. Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if, in cases where a TB test on an animal is deemed to be inconclusive, it is acceptable for the farmer to obtain a second opinion from a private veterinary officer; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Agriculture and Food (Dr. Woods): I am informed by the Director of ERAD that an animal's inconclusive status, as defined in the relevant EC Directive, is determined by both clinical observations and the skin measurement of the reaction to the injection of tuberculin at two sites on the animal's neck. The measurement of the reaction is made by reading a callipers 72 hours after the initial injection. As this is an objective measurement made at a specified time the question of a second opinion of the animal's status does not arise.
