Written Answers. - Funding for Purchase of Buildings.

176. Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the procedures which must be followed by his Department in relation to State funds being provided for the purchase of buildings by institutions in the higher education authority sector; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Education (Mr. Davern): The colleges of the National University of Ireland and Trinity College Dublin are authorised under their charters to purchase and dispose of buildings. Other universities may purchase buildings subject to the approval of the Minister for Education after consultation with the Higher Education Authority.

In circumstances where any university wishes to obtain State funding for the acquisition of buildings and where such buildings are suitable for higher education purposes in line with agreed policy and represent value for money, the State may provide a grant through the Higher Education Authority towards the acquisition costs involved.
