Dáil Éireann - Volume 411 - 31 October, 1991

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Air Corps Camp Heating.

12. Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Defence if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the heating arrangements for the Air Corps personnel in the hangar-workshop at Gormanston Camp in County Louth is totally inadequate; and if he will outline his proposals to improve [2276] the situation prior to the oncoming winter months.

Mr. Daly: I understand that heating in the hangar-workshop area at Gormanston Camp is provided by way of oil fired heaters. I am having the question of the adequacy of the heating examined.

Mr. Ryan: I might first thank the Minister for affording Deputy Bell and me an opportunity of visiting Gormanston Camp — incidentially located in County Meath, not County Louth. Would the Minister give serious consideration to having the hangar-workshop connected to the gas supply I understand to be available at the camp? Given the conditions obtaining I put it to the Minister that if such conditions prevailed within civilian life we would be confronted by a strike because the personnel there are working under dreadful conditions. Would the Minister give the request favourable consideration?

Mr. Daly: I am not satisfied with the position obtaining there. Certainly I will have it examined fully in the light of the representations I have received from the Deputy. I am glad that he had a useful visit to the camp. In so far as we can deal with the situation obtaining there, we will do so as soon as possible.
