Written Answers. - Increase in Cablelink Charges.

208. Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Communications the reason the recent increases in Cablelink charges, with effect from 1 May 1990, are so high; if he will outline the rationale for this increase in view of the fact that inflation is only at 3 per cent; and the way in which such an increase can be justified.

Minister for Communications (Mr. Burke): This increase took into account the rate of inflation from the date of the company's last increase, July 1988, together with the fact that Cablelink has made substantial investment in a primary trunk network in the Dublin area which is a new and necessary development and [203] also the fact that the company are now required to pay rates on virtually the entire cable system.
