Written Answers. - Psychiatric Patients Deaths.

228. Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Health if he will give suicide figures among former patients of psychiatric hospitals for each year from 1987 to 1989 inclusive; if there are any patterns emerging in this area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Health (Dr. O'Hanlon): My Department does not receive information with regard to suicide among former patients of psychiatric hospitals. However, deaths from causes other than natural causes among patients in psychiatric hospitals are notified to my Department. The notifications of such deaths which have been received in the Department in recent years do not indicate any significant increase in suicides among these patients.
