Written Answers. - Cigarette Sales.

227. Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Health if there are any statistics available to indicate any change in the sale of cigarettes over the last ten years.

Minister for Health (Dr. O'Hanlon): As part of its anti-smoking strategy, the Department of Health monitors the number of cigarettes sold and the percentage of the population which smokes. Statistics compiled by the CSO show that the number of cigarettes retained for home consumption decreased from 7.8 billion in 1978 to 5.7 billion in 1989.

The percentage of the population which smokes has decreased from 43 per cent in 1973 to 36 per cent in 1980 and to 30 per cent in 1988/89.
