Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for Labour if his attention has been drawn to the decision of the Registrar of Friendly Societies not to sanction the proposed merger between the National Union of Journalists and the Irish Print Union; if he will take steps to facilitate this merger; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Labour (Mr. B. Ahern): I am aware that the Registrar of Friendly Societies who operates in an independent [113] capacity has decided that the proposed transfer of engagements from the Irish Print Union to the National Union of Journalists cannot proceed under the Trade Union Act, 1975. This decision will be the subject of a judicial review in the High Court and it would not be appropriate for me to comment further on the matter at this stage.
