33. Mr. G. Collins asked the Minister for Finance the progress made to date by civil servants who are involved in visiting farmers for the purpose of adjusting acreage to accommodate the implementation of the Government land tax; and when it is expected that they will have completed their work.

Minister for Finance (Mr. Dukes): The staff of the farm tax commissioner, who is charged with classifying land in adjusted acres for the purposes of the Farm Tax Act, 1985, began the field work on inspecting holdings on 27 September [2381] 1985. By end-October 1985 they had inspected holdings having a total statute acreage of 20,700 acres. It is difficult to fix a target date for completion of the work before a greater level of experience of the field work has been acquired.

34. Mr. G. Collins asked the Minister for Finance the number of civil servants involved in farm visits for the purpose of adjusting acreage for the land tax, the average weekly salary being paid to such persons and the scale of expenses and allowances payable to them.

Minister for Finance (Mr. Dukes): There were 173 civil servants on 8 November 1985, assisting the farm tax commissioner in field work for the purposes of the Farm Tax Act, 1985. The average weekly salary paid to these officials is £271. Travelling and subsistence expenses are paid at the rates appropriate, and on the conditions applicable, to the Civil Service generally.
