367. Mr. Briscoe asked the Minister for Justice the total amount of fees over £5,000 paid to barristers and solicitors under the free Criminal Legal Aid Scheme in 1981; and the total figure for each of the three years prior to 1981.

Minister for Justice (Mr. J. Mitchell): As the Deputy will be aware, the granting of criminal legal aid is decided solely by the courts and my Department have no control over it. The total amounts of fees over £5,000 paid to (a) barristers and (b) solicitors under the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme in 1981 were as follows:—
