347. Mr. Mitchell asked the Minister for Labour if he is aware of possible redundancies in the Irish Hospitals Trust; if he is aware that measures were taken in the past to protect employment there; and if he has any further plans to protect Irish Hospitals Trust employment.

Minister for Labour (Mr. G. Fitzgerald): My Department have been notified under the Redundancy Payments [1654] Acts and the Protection of Employment Act of 227 prospective redundancies in the organisation in question.

I am aware that certain measures were taken in the past in an effort to maintain employment. A meeting between a trade union representing a number of the workers involved and senior officers of my Department has now been arranged to discuss the present situation.
