295. Mr. O'Donnell asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the Government's intentions regarding RTE 2; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Posts and Telegraphs (Mr. Faulkner): RTE will shortly begin technical test transmissions on the second television network. RTE plan to commence a pilot programme service during the summer of 1978 and to introduce a full service before the end of the year. Programmes will be broadcast for 28 hours per week and it is the present intention that 80 per cent of the content will consist of imported programmes. A programme council will advise the RTE Authority on the selection of imported programmes for the second service.
