Dáil Éireann - Volume 276 - 05 December, 1974 Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Vehicle Tax Harmonisation. Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass 13. Mr. Lemass asked the Minister for Local Government if there has been any progress on the proposals to arrange common automobile taxes within the EEC. Mr. Tully Mr. Tully 1071 Mr. Tully: The question of the harmonisation of motor vehicle taxes falls within the framework of EEC proposals for the institution of a common system of charging for the use of infrastructure. In so far as road infrastructure is concerned however, these proposals are at present being developed only in relation to [1071] commercial road vehicles. Consideration of the taxation of private cars, or “automobiles”, is a relatively longterm project which must await the outcome of detailed studies which are being organised by the Commission into the complex question of the allocation of road user costs in urban areas.
