Barry Mr. P. Barry: The number of officers in my Department directly engaged on weights and measures work is nine; a number of these officers have also other Departmental duties. Enforcement of the Weights and Measures Acts is the responsibility of the 67 full time inspectors of weights and measures, of whom 14 are employed by the local authorities and 53 are members of the Garda Síochána. It is not possible to say at this stage what expansion, if any, will be necessary in the Weights and Measures Section of my Department arising out of our obligations as members of the EEC and out of the general development of consumer protection legislation but the matter is being kept under review.
