8. Mr. M. O'Leary asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries whether he is aware that the price of home-grown tomatoes in shops is 5/-to 4/6d per lb; and whether he proposes to take any steps to ensure that the price will be more competitive.

Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries (Mr. Blaney): Some top-quality home-grown tomatoes in shops last week were priced at from 4/6d to 5/-per lb but supplies of Irish and imported tomatoes were also available at lower prices.

Supplies of home-grown tomatoes are now increasing substantially and these together with the amounts of imported still available after the import control began on 26th April should result in reasonable price levels prevailing.
