Mr. Norton Mr. Norton 1402 [1402] Mr. Norton asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state in respect of the years 1933 to 1937 inclusive the average retail price during the month of January in (a) Dublin, (b) Cork, (c) Limerick, (d) Galway, (e) Tullamore, and (f) Naas of the following commodities, i.e., household coal, household flour, bakers' bread, tea, sugar, milk, potatoes, streaky bacon, sirloin of beef, mutton, butter. Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass: The particulars which the Deputy requires are not available for the month of January, but a statement showing retail prices as at mid-February will be circulated with the Official Report. It should be observed that these prices are ascertained in connection with the quarterly compilation of cost-of-living figures, for which purpose it is intended only that the national average prices should correctly indicate the general trend. The average prices shown in the statement for Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway, which are based in all cases upon few quotations, must be regarded merely as approximations, and not necessarily for the same qualities of goods in the different towns. Only one or two quotations are available for each specified commodity for Tullamore and Naas and consequently average prices cannot be furnished. In the cases of coal and tea, the prices are for the grade of commodity used by the wage-earning classes. Following is the statement referred to:— RETAIL PRICES IN PENCE OF CERTAIN COMMODITIES AT MID-FEBRUARY IN EACH YEAR.
Mr. Norton Mr. Norton Mr. Norton asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state in respect of the years 1933 to 1937 inclusive the average cost in the month of January at the place of importation of the following commodities, i.e., household coal (per ton), Manitoba wheat (per quarter), all other imported wheat (per quarter), household flour (per sack), bakers' flour (per sack), tea (per lb.), sugar (per lb.). Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass: I am circulating with the Official Report a statement showing, so far as is available, the information required. The average values per unit appearing in this statement represent the cost, insurance and freight to the place of importation. The Official Import List does not provide a separate description for Manitoba wheat, but the statement shows the average value per cwt. of (a) Canadian wheat and (b) other wheat imported. The average value is shown per cwt., which is the unit of quantity required in accordance with the Official Import List. There are not separate descriptions for (a) household, and (b) bakers' flour, in the Official Import List, all such imports being included under the one description “wheat flour.” Following is the statement referred to:— Average Import Value c.i.f. per unit of quantity shown of the under-mentioned commodities imported into Saorstát Eireann during the month of January in each of the years 1933 to 1937, inclusive.
