Dáil Éireann - Volume 41 - 27 April, 1932 Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imports of Malt. Mr. Brasier Mr. Brasier Mr. Brasier asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether in view of the existing depression in the malting industry and consequent unemployment he will state what steps he proposes to take to restrict imports of malt, and if he is aware that such imports have the effect of still further increasing the present depression. Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass: On the information at present available to me I am of the opinion, which I understand is shared by the Saorstát malting industry, that a restriction of imports would not under present conditions be to the advantage of the industry. Mr. Braiser Mr. Braiser Mr. Braiser: Is it not possible to supply all the requirements of this industry from the Free State? Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass: That is a separate question. Mr. Morrissey Mr. Morrissey Mr. Morrissey: Will the Minister consult Deputy Corry about this matter? Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass: There can be no question that it is possible to do so. The question put was whether it is advisable, under present conditions, to restrict imports of malt. I am of opinion, and it is shared by those in the industry, that it would not be to the advantage of the industry to do so at present. Mr. Anthony Mr. Anthony Mr. Anthony: Does the Minister agree with what was stated by a member of his Party last Friday, Deputy Corry? Dáil Éireann 41 Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers.
