Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing (Gaeltacht) Act, 1929—Suggested Extension.

Tomás O Deirg asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state what special arrangements (if any) have been made to enable applicants under the Housing (Gaeltacht) Act, 1929, who are unable to make any financial contribution towards the cost of building to avail themselves of the facilities afforded; and whether he will consider the advisability of increasing the grant in such cases.

Mr. Lynch: The permissible grant and loan are sufficient in all cases to enable a person desiring to build a house under the Act to meet the whole financial burden if he is in a position himself to supply the stones and unskilled labour.

Mr. Derrig: Am I to understand that the Minister is satisfied that where the material has to be brought by rail, and where the applicants themselves are unable to make a contribution, that the £10 is sufficient, even in the case of the very poorest people? I am informed that it is not so in Connemara.

[803] Mr. Lynch: I am satisfied it is so, because the very fact of getting £10 is sufficient indication that the building of the house has been sanctioned by the Department, and the merchants who supply the material are usually prepared to give credit in that respect.

Mr. Derrig: Would the Minister be prepared to ask his inspectors to look into any case that may be brought under his notice?

Mr. Lynch: Yes.
