Dáil Éireann - Volume 39 - 24 June, 1931

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - The Shannon Scheme—Flooding of Lands.

Mr. M.P. Connolly asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in deciding on any extension of the Shannon Scheme which is likely to affect the Shannon between Athlone, Lanesboro, Tarmonbarry, and Carrick-on-Shannon, he will secure such a reduction of the present high level as will prevent or greatly lessen the present flooding of lands in Longford, Leitrim, and Roscommon.

Minister for Industry and Commerce (Mr. McGilligan): In investigating alternative methods of increasing water storage for power purposes in the Upper Shannon full consideration will be given to the desirability of mitigating flooding so far as the conditions of the problem allow.
