Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Saorstát Sugar Consumption.

Mr. Cassidy (for Tomás O Conaill) asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what was the quantity of sugar estimated to have been consumed by persons in the Saorstát in the year 1926, or any later year for which an estimate has been made, and what was the amount of sugar estimated to have been used in the same year in manufactures (e.g., jams, confectionery, biscuits, etc.).

Mr. Bourke: It is estimated from statistics referring to the year 1929 that 81,000 tons of sugar were consumed by persons in the Saorstát, and that 19,000 tons were used in manufactures.
