Dáil Éireann - Volume 38 - 06 May, 1931 Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Suggested Pier at Whiddy Island. Tadhg O Murchadha Tadhg O Murchadha Tadhg O Murchadha asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he is aware of the necessity for a small pier or landing stage at Whiddy Island, Bantry Bay, and if he will have the proposal examined and reported on by an inspector of his Department. Mr. Lynch Mr. Lynch Mr. Lynch: I would refer the Deputy to the reply to his question of 23rd February, 1928, on this subject. I am still of the opinion that the landing facilities existing on Whiddy Island are adequate to the needs of the fishermen. Mr. Murphy Mr. Murphy Mr. Murphy: Is the Minister aware that twice within the last twelve months the whole gear and outfit of the fishermen in the locality were swept away, principally because of the fact that there was no shelter there? Is he aware that local opinion is unanimously in favour of some action being taken? Mr. Lynch Mr. Lynch Mr. Lynch: The report of the superintendent responsible for the locality is to the effect that for the amount of fishing done from the island —27 yawls and one motor yawl—the present facilities are sufficient. Mr. Murphy Mr. Murphy Mr. Murphy: Does the Minister not consider that when the gear and outfit have been destroyed within twelve months that is not sufficient ground for taking steps for their protection? Mr. Lynch Mr. Lynch Mr. Lynch: The question is as to what was the cause, whether it was lack of facilities for landing or otherwise? Mr. Murphy Mr. Murphy Mr. Murphy: There is absolutely no question on that point. Mr. Lynch Mr. Lynch 750 [750] Mr. Lynch: There is. Dáil Éireann 38 Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers.
