Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Insanitary Houses in Co. Clare.

Pádraig O hOgáin (An Clár) asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state the number of insanitary houses in the urban districts of Ennis and Kilrush; and also, the number of insanitary houses in the other towns of the administrative county of Clare.

General Mulcahy: According to the Housing Survey made by municipal authorities in 1929, 100 houses were required to replace insanitary houses in the Ennis Urban District, and 124 such houses in the Kilrush Urban District. The Town Commissioners of Kilkee stated that there were no houses required in the town to replace insanitary dwellings. I have no information regarding the number of insanitary houses in non-municipal towns in Country Clare.

Mr. Hogan: Does the Minister propose to make any survey to ascertain the number of insanitary houses in non-urbanised towns in the Saorstát with a view to seeing what the problem really is?

[748] General Mulcahy: If we confine ourselves to County Clare, the Clare County Council would assist in the matter of knowing where they stood in that respect if they would proceed with the appointment of a county medical officer of health.

Mr. Hogan: If the Clare County Council will help as far as they can, will the Minister give a direction or a lead to ascertain the number of insanitary houses in Clare or in any other county?

General Mulcahy: I have nothing before me at the moment to suggest that I should do that.
