Dáil Éireann - Volume 38 - 06 May, 1931 Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mountjoy Prisoner. Tomás O Maoláin Tomás O Maoláin Tomás O Maoláin asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that George Mooney, a political prisoner of Dublin, undergoing sentence in Mountjoy Prison, is reported to be seriously ill, and that his parents and friends have been refused permission to visit or write to him; and will he state the grounds for such refusal, and whether he intends to remedy this grievance. Mr. Fitzgerald-Kenney Mr. Fitzgerald-Kenney Mr. Fitzgerald-Kenney: I am not aware that any such report as is suggested has been circulated, but I am prepared to believe that it has. The prisoner is, in fact, not seriously ill, but undoubtedly his health has suffered from his refusal to take exercise. He is not allowed the privileges of writing letters or of receiving letters or visits because these privileges are granted only to prisoners who obey the prison rules. His friends and relatives have frequently been informed to this effect. I do not understand what the Deputy means by suggesting that I should “remedy this grievance.” It is within the prisoner's own power at any time to qualify for the privileges in question by obeying the prison rules.
