[676] Mr. Fitzgerald-Kenney: I move: “That this Bill be read a Second Time.” It is a continuation of the Bill which is, to some extent, still necessary. It enables the Board of Works to acquire premises for the housing of Guards. The powers are very seldom used, but they are still used in one or two instances, and we consider it necessary to have them until the housing problem in reference to the Guards is solved. A similar Bill has been passed on previous occasions.

Mr. Little: Perhaps the Minister would tell us at what rate he is using these powers, how many new barracks have been built, and to what extent does he intend to exercise the powers given in the Bill?

Mr. Fitzgerald-Kenney: I should explain that new barracks do not come under the Bill. They are being built by the Board of Works. This is merely a Bill giving power to acquire existing houses for the temporary accommodation of the Guards.
