Mr. MacEntee Mr. MacEntee 439 Mr. MacEntee asked the Minister for Finance to state the number of cases, in the years 1928, 1929 and 1930, respectively, in which individuals were imprisoned for failure to pay excise penalties imposed under the Betting Act, 1926, and to state in relation to each case (a) the name of the person [439] involved, (b) the amount of the excise penalty originally imposed, (c) the amount subsequently accepted by the Revenue Commissioners in settlement of such penalty, and (d) the period for which the person concerned was imprisoned. Mr. Blythe Mr. Blythe Mr. Blythe: The number of cases in which individuals were imprisoned for failure to pay excise penalties imposed under the Betting Act, 1926, was three. The particulars required, with the exception of the names, are as follows:— A penalty of £500, mitigated to £125, was imposed by the District Justice in the first case. The penalty was further mitigated by the Revenue Commissioners to £50. In default of payment the defendant was imprisoned for 13 weeks. A penalty of £500, mitigated to £125, was imposed by the District Justice in the second case. The defendant was imprisoned for one week and released on payment of £20. A penalty of £500, mitigated to £125, was imposed by the District Justice in the third case. The defendant was imprisoned for two months and released without any payment.
