Dáil Éireann - Volume 36 - 20 November, 1930 CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - Industrial Insurance Legislation. Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if it is the intention of the Executive Council to introduce proposals for legislation arising out of the Report of the Committee on Industrial Assurance, 1923, and, if so, when. Mr. McGilligan Mr. McGilligan Mr. McGilligan: I am not satisfied that legislation on the lines recommended by the Committee on Industrial Assurance, 1923, would provide an adequate solution of difficulties which arise in connection with the existing law, or would be in the best interests of the insuring public in the Saorstát. The matter has reactions on the general question of life assurance, and remains under consideration as part of the whole insurance position, which involves far-reaching aspects of policy. Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass: Will the Minister state if it is the intention of the Executive Council to introduce proposals for legislation to amend the Acts relating to industrial assurance any time in the near future? Mr. McGilligan Mr. McGilligan 180 Mr. McGilligan: If the Deputy is addressing himself to proposals to amend the Acts relating to industrial [180] assurance on the basis of the report of the Committee, I do not think I have ever given a promise to that effect. I said the general insurance position was under review, and I had hoped to have proposals here, but the developments of that have been even more serious than they were when the Deputy last heard this discussed privately. Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass Mr. Lemass: Are we to take it that the Minister has no hope of being able to introduce legislation? Mr. McGilligan Mr. McGilligan Mr. McGilligan: No, I am only postponing the date of introduction still further. Dáil Éireann 36 CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. Industrial Insurance Legislation.
