Dáil Éireann - Volume 35 - 05 June, 1930 Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Poe Estate (Co. Tipperary). Mr. Fogarty Mr. Fogarty Mr. Fogarty asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether he is prepared to remit the amounts proposed to be added as compounded arrears of rent to the purchase money of the holdings of John Campion, James Hayes, John Hogan, Stephen Walsh, Michael Lanigan, William Lanigan and William Lahert, tenants on the estate of Lady Frances Poe, in view of the fact that a fair purchase price which ensures a favourable return to the landlord has already been fixed upon these tenants, and that they have been paying excessive amounts as payment in lieu of rent for the past six years. Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Lands and Fisheries (Mr. Roddy) Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Lands and Fisheries (Mr. Roddy) Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Lands and Fisheries (Mr. Roddy): The Land Commission have no power to remit the amounts which have been added to the standard price in these cases in respect of compounded arrears of rent. The cases of the tenants referred to by the Deputy are no different from those of tenants generally who held their lands at judicial rents and who have in fact benefited, first, by the reduction of 25 per cent. off rents in arrear provided for in the 1923 Act, and secondly, by the statutory arrangement by which the arrears so reduced and compounded were added to the standard price. Mr. Fogarty Mr. Fogarty 554 Mr. Fogarty: In view of the fact that these tenants are paying an excessive amount in lieu of rent for the past six years, does the Parliamentary Secretary think it is either [554] just or fair to ask them to pay the compounded arrears? Mr. Roddy Mr. Roddy Mr. Roddy: Perfectly just. The tenants were notified of the compounded arrears that they would have to pay and they were given time to object, and they did not object. In any event, these provisions are in the Land Acts of 1923 and 1927 and we are acting literally in accordance with the provisions. Mr. Fogarty Mr. Fogarty Mr. Fogarty: Are they statutory? Mr. Roddy Mr. Roddy Mr. Roddy: Yes. Dáil Éireann 35 Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. Poe Estate (Co. Tipperary). Questions 19300605
