Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Alleged Assaults by C.I.D. Men.

Mr. Aiken (for Mr. de Valera) asked the Minister for Justice if he has received a copy of an affidavit relating to an alleged assault by a member of the Detective Branch of the Gárda Síochána on Mr. Thomas Breen, Derryshane, Coolmen, County Clare; if he has caused any inquiry to be made into the allegations therein; and, if so, if he will state by whom such inquiry was held, the names of the witnesses examined, the result of the inquiry, and the nature of the disciplinary action, if any, taken or proposed to be taken, against the officer concerned.

[1611] Minister for Justice (Mr. Fitzgerald-Kenney): The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. As regards the rest of the question I have to say that I have considered the allegations made and I have had before me the relevant police reports. I do not propose to take any further action in the matter.

Mr. Aiken (for Mr. de Valera) asked the Minister for Justice if he has now received statements relating to an alleged assault by members of the Detective Branch of the Gárda Síochána on Mr. Patrick Cahill, Crossmore, Kilmurry-MacMahon, County Clare; if he has caused any inquiry to be held into the allegations therein; and, if so, if he will state by whom such inquiry was held, the names of the witnesses examined, the result of the inquiry, and the nature of the disciplinary action, if any, taken, or proposed to be taken, against the officers concerned.

Mr. Fitzgerald-Kenney: The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. I have considered the allegations made and the relevant police reports and I do not propose to take any further action in the matter.
