Mr. Lemass asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he can state the number of additional workers, if any, employed in the woollen industry since the imposition of the duty on imported cloth, indicating the additional number of each class (i.e., spinners, carders, weavers, etc.).

Mr. Dolan: According to the information furnished to my Department by the Saorstát woollen manufacturers the number of workers employed in the woollen industry (excluding blanket making) in September, 1928, was 1,409. The corresponding figure in respect of September, 1929, was 1,795. The amount of employment in September, 1928, may be regarded as normal for the period before the imposition of the tariff, so that 386 may be taken as representing approximately the increased employment in the industry since the tariff was adopted in February, 1929. I am not furnished with sufficient details to enable me to indicate the additional number of workers employed in each class, that is, spinners, carders, weavers, etc. The following are the numbers of workers employed on blanket making at the periods indicated:—
